Big views from this spot, but it was windy.

  • Pack in, pack out

Four primitive campgrounds strung along Skyline Drive, the 18-mile ridge road that runs the length of the park. Each has tables, fire rings and a vault toilet, and that is the whole facility list. Potable water from late spring to early fall at the base of Mission Mountain, near Mile Nine, and at Redtail.

The camps and their coordinates:
Mission Mountain 47.06717, -116.94429 (4,320 ft, pinned here)
Fireplace 47.08039, -116.91829 (3,796 ft)
Iron Mountain 47.11998, -116.97006 (4,073 ft)
Redtail 47.06267, -116.94342

Enter from US-95 at the south end, just north of the Mineral Mountain rest area. The Palouse falls away on both sides and the sunsets are the reason to come. Greasy after rain, and it is a long way down if you slide. If you get there too early in the season you'll run into snow. Early summer, or late spring is ideal. It's a lovely drive.
